IP Allowlisting

A control that limits access to a service or admin panel to approved IP addresses.

IP allowlisting is an access control method that permits a service, dashboard, or admin panel to accept connections only from preapproved source IP addresses. Everything else is denied by default. In practice, administrators use it to restrict sensitive interfaces such as web consoles, update portals, or management APIs to office networks, VPN ranges, or jump hosts.

This matters because many attacks start with broad internet exposure. If an admin page is reachable from anywhere, attackers can scan it, brute-force credentials, or probe for software flaws. Allowlisting reduces that attack surface by making the service invisible to most sources. It is especially useful for platforms like ColdFusion, where the administration layer is high value. However, it is not a complete defense: a compromised approved host, a stolen VPN exit, or a misconfigured cloud range can still open access. For best results, pair allowlisting with strong authentication, patching, and least-privilege network design.
