ISM band

unlicensed spectrum used for industrial, scientific, and medical devices in many regions.

The ISM band is unlicensed radio spectrum reserved in many regions for industrial, scientific, and medical equipment, but commonly used by consumer and hobby systems too. Technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID, and some LoRa deployments operate in these bands because users do not need an individual radio license, as long as they follow local power and emission rules.

In cyber security, the ISM band matters because open access cuts both ways. It lowers the barrier for legitimate devices, but it also makes wireless systems easier to interfere with, jam, or impersonate if protocols are weak. Defenders use spectrum monitoring, channel hopping, spread spectrum, encryption, and strong device authentication to reduce risk. For community mesh networks, the ISM band is part of the threat model: resilience depends not only on software, but on surviving interference, rogue transmitters, and crowded airspace.
