Isopropanol

A commonly used cleaning alcohol for removing oils and residue from surfaces.

Isopropanol, often called isopropyl alcohol or IPA, is a fast-evaporating cleaning solvent used to remove oils, dust, adhesive residue, and other contaminants from surfaces. It is common in electronics, lab work, and maintenance because it dries quickly and usually leaves little residue behind.

In cyber security, clean surfaces and components matter. Technicians use isopropanol when preparing hardware for repair, cleaning keyboards or device housings, or sanitizing tools in a controlled lab. It also appears in incident response and forensics workflows, where contamination can affect evidence quality or hardware testing. In physical attacks, an intruder might use it to clean a part before applying tape, glue, or replacement components, while defenders use it to restore equipment and support repeatable, documented procedures. Like many simple tools, its value comes from controlled use rather than guesswork.
