Kubernetes scheduler

The component in Kubernetes that assigns Pods to nodes, affecting placement, contention, and performance.

The Kubernetes scheduler is the control-plane component that decides which node should run each Pod. It evaluates resource requests, labels, taints, affinities, availability, and policy constraints, then places workloads where they are most likely to run successfully. That placement is not just an efficiency concern: it directly affects performance, isolation, and resilience.

In cyber security, the scheduler matters because bad placement can increase contention, expose sensitive workloads to noisy neighbors, or break assumptions about segregation between trust zones. Attackers who gain cluster access may try to create resource pressure, influence placement, or trigger pods onto crowded nodes to degrade service. Defenders use requests and limits, node affinity, taints, tolerations, and pod anti-affinity to control where code runs and to reduce blast radius. Watching scheduler decisions and resulting latency can also help detect anomalous workloads before they become an outage.
