Laser carving

using a laser to cut or pattern material with precision.

Laser carving is the use of a focused laser beam to cut, engrave, or pattern a material with high precision. In electronics, it can shape paper, plastic, wood, or other substrates to create fine features such as channels, traces, or alignment marks. Because the process is computer-controlled, it can produce repeatable patterns that are difficult to make by hand.

In cyber security, laser carving matters when hardware is part of the trust boundary. It is used to build low-cost prototypes, disposable sensors, anti-counterfeit markings, and custom enclosures. Precise patterning can support secure design by enabling controlled fluid paths in papertronics, tamper-evident layouts, or unique identifiers for device tracking. The same precision can also be abused: an attacker may copy a pattern, alter a substrate, or remove visual evidence of tampering. For that reason, laser-carved components must be evaluated for consistency, durability, and resistance to cloning or modification.
