The Law Enforcement Directive (LED), formally Directive (EU) 2016/680, sets rules for how competent authorities process personal data for law-enforcement purposes, such as preventing, investigating, detecting, or prosecuting crime. It establishes privacy safeguards and security and accountability requirements, which EU member states implement through national law. It is distinct from the GDPR, which generally governs other personal-data processing.
For security teams, the LED makes controlled access, appropriate retention, secure data handling, and demonstrable accountability important parts of protecting police data. Systems may use role-based permissions and protected audit logs to record actions such as consulting, changing, or disclosing records. Those controls help organizations investigate misuse and show that processing was authorized and traceable; logs themselves must also be protected and retained appropriately.
