Leak surface

the collection of systems or channels where sensitive material can escape.

A leak surface is the collection of systems, accounts, tools, and channels where sensitive material can escape. It includes obvious places such as file shares, chat tools, cloud buckets, and source code repositories, as well as less visible paths like logs, screenshots, backups, support tickets, and copied data on endpoint devices. The larger the leak surface, the more chances an attacker, insider, or careless workflow has to expose secrets.

In cyber security, leak surface matters because disclosure is often the first step in a wider compromise. Reused passwords, API keys, internal documents, and build artifacts can help an attacker move from public information to deeper access. Defenders reduce leak surface by limiting access, classifying data, scanning for exposed secrets, hardening storage, and monitoring for unusual sharing. When a leak is suspected, the key question is not just what was posted, but which channels could have carried the material and whether any exposed secrets must be revoked.
