Legacy architecture

Older or fragmented infrastructure that can be harder to secure, monitor, and update consistently.

Legacy architecture is an older or fragmented technical environment made up of systems, tools, and workflows that were not designed to operate as one modern security stack. It may include outdated platforms, inconsistent configurations, limited logging, unsupported software, or separate tools that do not share telemetry well. In cyber security, this matters because security controls are harder to apply uniformly, and visibility across endpoints, networks, and identities is often incomplete.

Attackers look for these gaps: unpatched components, weak segmentation, shared credentials, and monitoring blind spots can all be easier to abuse in legacy environments. Defenders respond by inventorying assets, isolating critical systems, centralizing logs, and adding compensating controls where full replacement is not yet possible. In practice, reducing legacy risk is not only about upgrading hardware or software; it is about making policy enforcement, detection, and incident response consistent across the whole environment.
