Legacy brand

An older name that still carries recognition and trust long after the original era.

A legacy brand is an older name, logo, or identity that still carries recognition and trust even after the original company, product line, or era has changed. In cybersecurity, legacy brands matter because trust often follows the badge, not the current owner or technical reality. Attackers can exploit that familiarity by creating fake support sites, malicious downloads, impersonation emails, or lookalike storefronts that seem legitimate because they borrow a trusted old name.

Defenders have to verify more than the label. They check domain ownership, code signing, release notes, certificates, and official channels before trusting a revived product or announcement. A legacy brand can also help defenders when it is clearly documented and consistently controlled, because users can quickly recognize the real source. The risk appears when nostalgia outruns proof: if ownership, licensing, or authorization is unclear, the brand may create confidence without evidence. That is why a familiar name should be treated as a clue, not as authentication.
