A legacy estate is the set of older applications, servers, operating systems, databases, middleware, and third-party dependencies an organization still depends on. These systems may be stable and business-critical, but they often run on outdated code, weak authentication, or software that is no longer fully supported. In cyber security, that makes them harder to patch, monitor, and integrate with modern defenses.
Attackers often target legacy estates because they can expose known vulnerabilities, default credentials, brittle remote access paths, or flat networks that make lateral movement easier. Defenders focus on asset inventory, vulnerability management, network segmentation, and compensating controls such as virtual patching, stricter access rules, and application wrapping. A clear view of the legacy estate is essential, because you cannot secure what you do not know still exists.
