License metadata

The formal terms that describe how a model may be used, modified, or redistributed.

License metadata is the structured information that states the legal terms attached to a software package, dataset, or AI model. It tells users whether the artifact may be used, modified, shared, or redistributed, and under what conditions such as attribution, non-commercial use, or copyleft obligations. In AI systems, license metadata may appear in a model card, repository file, package manifest, or platform record.

In cyber security, license metadata matters because it defines what a team is actually allowed to deploy and where it can be moved. Missing, inconsistent, or changed metadata can create compliance risk, block incident response, or prevent a safe mirror or rollback. Attackers may exploit confusion around licensing by repackaging artifacts, hiding restrictions, or swapping metadata to make an untrusted model look legitimate. Defenders check license metadata during procurement and supply-chain review to verify provenance, support audits, and ensure that security controls do not depend on terms that could change upstream.
