Life cycle

The full span of a technology’s existence, from design and release to support, monitoring, and retirement.

A technology’s life cycle is the full span of its existence: design, development, release, operation, maintenance, monitoring, and retirement. In cybersecurity, this matters because security is not a single checkpoint before launch. Controls have to be built in early, kept effective during use, and closed down safely at the end.

Attackers often target weak points in the life cycle, such as unpatched software, expired certificates, stale credentials, insecure updates, or systems that were retired without proper cleanup. Defenders use the same life-cycle view to reduce risk: secure coding and threat modeling during design, vulnerability management after release, logging and risk reviews during operation, and secure decommissioning when a product reaches end of support. A strong life cycle also helps with compliance, because it gives teams evidence that security decisions, updates, and shutdown steps were handled consistently.
