Live-service update

A software change pushed to an online game after launch, often affecting gameplay systems.

A live-service update is a software change delivered to an online game after launch. Unlike a one-time release, it can change gameplay systems, matchmaking rules, server behavior, content delivery, or client features while the service is still running.

In cyber security, live-service updates matter because they create a trusted update path and a moving target. Defenders must protect patch signing, distribution servers, and build pipelines, since tampered updates or spoofed clients can break integrity or enable abuse. Operators also watch for version drift: after a patch, servers, mods, bots, and third-party tools may fail until they are retested. Attackers often exploit that gap by targeting outdated clients, incompatible plugins, or weak update infrastructure. Good defenses include code signing, staged rollouts, integrity checks, and rapid validation after deployment.
