Local Denial-of-Service (DoS)

An availability attack that disrupts a system or service from the local machine or trusted context.

Local denial-of-service is an availability attack that disrupts a system, application, or security feature from the same device or from a trusted local context. Unlike remote exploits, it does not need Internet access or a network-wide foothold; it relies on the attacker already having some level of local execution or influence.

This matters in cyber security because a product can look healthy while a key function is silently blocked. In endpoint defense, a local DoS may stop update services, delay security-content delivery, or consume resources until protection becomes stale. Attackers, testers, and misconfigurations can all create this effect. Defenders should monitor service health, update success, fallback paths, and the freshness of security content, not just whether the security tool is running.
