lwIP

A lightweight TCP/IP stack designed for embedded and resource-constrained systems.

lwIP is a lightweight TCP/IP stack used in embedded and other resource-constrained systems. It provides core networking functions such as IP, TCP, UDP, and basic socket-style services without the overhead of a full desktop-grade network stack. Because it is small and portable, manufacturers often build it directly into firmware for routers, sensors, controllers, and industrial devices.

In cyber security, lwIP matters because a flaw in a shared network stack can affect many products at once. Bugs in memory handling, packet parsing, or connection state can lead to crashes, denial of service, data corruption, or, in some cases, code execution. Attackers may target these weaknesses through malformed network traffic, while defenders look for them by inventorying firmware, checking whether a fixed version is present, and limiting exposure of devices that run the stack. For embedded environments, updates may require a vendor image or full firmware rebuild rather than a simple package patch.
