Malicious copy-and-paste

A user-execution technique where victims are persuaded to paste attacker-controlled commands into system tools.

Malicious copy-and-paste is a user-execution technique in which an attacker persuades a victim to copy a command and paste it into a system tool such as Run, Terminal, or PowerShell. Instead of exploiting software directly, the attacker relies on the user to become the execution step. This makes the lure look like a harmless instruction while still leading to code execution.

This matters because it can bypass controls that focus on files and attachments: the dangerous command may be assembled, decoded, or launched only after the paste action. In real attacks, fake verification pages, CAPTCHA prompts, and “fix this issue” messages are common covers. Defenders should treat any webpage that asks users to paste commands as suspicious, monitor for unusual command-line launches, and train users to stop when a site requests manual execution.
