Manufacturing automation

connected systems and software used to support or control production workflows.

Manufacturing automation means the connected equipment, control systems, and software used to monitor or support production workflows. It can include industrial controllers, engineering tools, production-management software, and systems that exchange data with business networks.

These systems matter in cyber security because disruption can affect production, safety, or delivery, while connections between operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) may create paths for attackers. Ransomware or stolen credentials can threaten production indirectly through compromised business systems or remote access. Defenders reduce risk by segmenting production networks, restricting and monitoring remote access, securing privileged accounts, and preparing recovery plans. A claim involving a manufacturer does not by itself establish that automation systems were compromised.
