A marine satellite-TV antenna is a shipboard system that receives television signals from satellites while a vessel is moving. Unlike a simple fixed dish, it typically combines a reflector and radio-frequency components with motors, sensors, and an antenna control unit (ACU) that keeps the antenna pointed toward the satellite as the ship changes position.
In cyber security, the term matters because these systems can include powered controllers and, depending on the installation, interfaces to other onboard equipment. Before reusing or connecting one, identify its power and control paths and check whether any network interfaces are present; do not assume that the dish is only a passive reflector or that a network connection exists. This inventory helps prevent unsafe integrations and unintended exposure. In hardware-repurposing projects, understanding the original control system is essential before adapting the equipment for a new purpose.
