Market fragmentation is a condition in which several competing products, platforms, or business models coexist without one format becoming dominant. In social media, for example, services may attract users through different audiences, features, or styles of interaction rather than converging on a single model.
Fragmentation matters to cybersecurity because each platform can create different trust and safety challenges. Attackers may exploit the features of particular services for impersonation, scams, automated spam, or misleading content, while defenders must adapt controls to each platform’s design and user base. A fragmented market also makes it harder to apply one consistent set of security practices across services. The term describes a market condition, not evidence of an attack or vulnerability on its own.
