Marketing consent

Permission to use personal data for promotional contact.

Marketing consent is permission from a person to use their personal data for promotional contact, such as phone calls, email, or SMS. In privacy and security programs, it is more than a checkbox: it is a record that shows what was agreed to, when it was granted, and for which channel or purpose. If that record is weak or outdated, an organization may contact people unlawfully or process data beyond the allowed scope.

In cyber security, marketing consent matters because telemarketing and customer-engagement systems often rely on shared databases, CRM tools, and calling platforms. Defenders use consent logs, suppression lists, and access controls to make sure only eligible contacts are reached. Attackers and fraudsters may abuse poor consent management to mask spam campaigns, harvest personal data, or trigger unauthorized outreach from compromised systems. Good consent handling supports compliance, reduces abuse, and provides evidence that a contact was permitted.
