Mesh VPN

A network design where devices connect through an overlay rather than a classic central VPN gateway.

A mesh VPN connects devices through an encrypted overlay network instead of routing all traffic through a single central VPN gateway. Each authorized device can communicate with other devices according to the network’s access policies. Some systems coordinate connections through a control plane while establishing direct or relayed data paths.

Mesh VPNs can simplify remote access, but they make device identity, policy rules, and endpoint security especially important: a compromised or overly trusted device may expose resources reachable from it. In real deployments, administrators should restrict which users and devices can connect, review features such as SSH and traffic forwarding, and protect privileged local services and sockets from unintended access. A mesh design does not automatically grant every device unrestricted access; risk depends on configuration and permissions.
