Micro-community

A small online group centered on a shared topic, identity, or goal; the label does not prove coordination.

A micro-community is a small online group organized around a shared topic, identity, or goal. It may form in a messaging app, social network, forum, or other digital space. The term describes a group’s size and focus; by itself, it does not show that members are coordinating or acting inauthentically.

In cyber security and election analysis, micro-communities can help people share information and mobilize, but the same channels may also carry misleading content or coordinated amplification. Analysts distinguish ordinary participation from manipulation by examining evidence such as account behavior, posting patterns, content provenance, and links between accounts. Closed groups can be difficult to observe, so available data may not represent the full conversation.
