Mission impairment occurs when a satellite remains in orbit but loses some or all of its ability to perform its intended function. Damage to a payload, reduced power, or failure of a key subsystem can prevent the spacecraft from delivering its planned service without physically destroying it.
In cybersecurity and satellite operations, impairment matters because systems must be assessed by what they can reliably do, not just whether they are still online. Operators monitor telemetry and investigate anomalies to identify degraded capabilities, maintain contingency plans, and support recovery or service continuity. In insurance, engineering evidence and policy wording help determine whether impairment qualifies as a covered loss; it is not automatically equivalent to total destruction.
