Motherboard

the main circuit board that connects a device’s core electronic parts.

A motherboard is the main circuit board in a device. It connects the CPU, memory, storage, power delivery, ports, and other components so they can communicate and operate as one system. Because so many critical paths meet on the board, damage or tampering there can affect the entire device.

In cyber security, motherboards matter because they sit close to the hardware trust chain. Firmware stored on or used by the board can control how a system starts, and attackers who gain physical access may try to modify board components, implant extra circuitry, or abuse debug interfaces. Defenders care about motherboard integrity when securing servers, laptops, consoles, and embedded devices, since board-level compromise can bypass software-only protections. In practice, security teams use tamper checks, secure boot, signed firmware, and careful hardware inspection to reduce that risk. In repair and preservation, a damaged motherboard may be the point where a device stops being trustworthy or even usable.
