Multicloud key management is the centralized control of encryption keys across more than one cloud provider or environment. Instead of managing separate key systems in each platform, security teams use one policy and one oversight layer for creation, rotation, access, backup, and revocation. This matters because the key is often the real boundary protecting encrypted data. If keys are fragmented, auditors may not know who can decrypt what, and incident responders may struggle to contain exposure quickly.
In real defenses, multicloud key management supports consistent access control, logging, separation of duties, and sovereignty requirements across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, or private infrastructure. In attacks, compromised admin accounts, weak API permissions, or misconfigured key services can let an intruder disable controls or decrypt data across multiple environments. Centralized key management reduces that risk by making policy enforcement, rotation, and recovery easier to test and verify.
