Non-consensual intimate image abuse

The sharing or use of intimate images without a person’s permission.

Non-consensual intimate image abuse is the sharing, posting, threatening, or use of intimate images without the person’s permission. It is a form of online abuse that can harm privacy, safety, reputation, and mental well-being. In cyber security and platform operations, it matters because the abuse often depends on digital infrastructure: accounts, messaging systems, file hosts, domains, and access controls.

Defenders encounter this term when investigating reports, removing harmful content, preserving evidence, and limiting repeat abuse. Attackers may use stolen credentials, compromised devices, fake accounts, or disposable domains to distribute images and evade moderation. Strong authentication, rapid takedown processes, logging, and careful access control can reduce the impact. Because the abuse is both technical and interpersonal, effective defense requires both security controls and victim-centered response.
