Non-consensual intimate imagery

Sexual or private images of a real person created or shared without permission.

Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) is sexual or private imagery of a real person created or shared without that person’s permission. The material may be a genuine photo, a stolen image, or an AI-generated fake that depicts someone in an intimate context. In cyber security, NCII is a serious abuse case because it turns digital systems into tools for privacy invasion, harassment, extortion, and reputational damage.

NCII appears in real attacks through account compromise, data theft, social engineering, and misuse of generative AI features. Defenders reduce the risk with strong access controls, abuse reporting, content moderation, image hashing, rate limiting, logging, and fast takedown workflows. These controls matter because once intimate content is created or reposted, it can spread quickly and be hard to remove, even if no system was technically hacked.
