Non-IP Asset

A device or component that does not communicate using standard Internet Protocol networking.

A non-IP asset is a device or component that does not communicate over standard Internet Protocol (IP) networks. In operational technology (OT), this can include legacy industrial equipment, isolated devices, or components that use specialized protocols or serial connections instead of IP.

Non-IP assets matter because conventional network discovery tools may not detect them, leaving gaps in inventories and network maps. Those gaps can obscure security risks and complicate monitoring or incident response. Defenders should validate automated discovery against physical inspections, system records, and equipment-owner knowledge. Discovery methods must also be tested carefully in OT environments, where scanning can disrupt sensitive systems.
