npm namespace

The ownership boundary that identifies who controls a package name in the npm registry.

An npm namespace is the ownership boundary that identifies who controls a package name in the npm registry. In practice, it is the naming space under which a maintainer or organization can publish packages, often using a scope such as @scope/package. This boundary helps users and tooling tell legitimate packages from lookalikes, and it reduces accidental name collisions.

In cyber security, the namespace matters because attackers try to abuse trust in familiar package names. If publishing credentials, automation, or account access are compromised, a malicious release can appear inside an otherwise legitimate namespace and be installed by developers or CI systems. Defenders use namespace control, multi-factor authentication, restricted publish permissions, provenance checks, and dependency review to reduce that risk. A trusted namespace is helpful, but it does not guarantee that every release inside it is safe.
