npm provenance is metadata attached to a package that describes where it came from: the source commit, the build environment, and the workflow used to publish it. For software teams, it creates an auditable chain from code to artifact, helping confirm that a package was built by the expected process.
In cyber security, provenance matters because it strengthens supply-chain trust, but it does not prove a package is safe. An attacker who compromises a release workflow, CI/CD job, or publishing credential can still produce a malicious package with valid-looking provenance. Defenders use provenance alongside code review, branch and tag protection, workflow permissions, and package-diff analysis. For consumers, it is a useful signal to verify origin, not a guarantee that the code inside is benign.
