On-prem deployment

Software run inside an organization’s own environment instead of being fully hosted by a vendor.

An on-prem deployment is software installed and run inside an organization’s own environment, such as its data center or private network, rather than being fully hosted by the vendor. The customer usually controls the servers, networking, access rules, patching, backups, and logging. That extra control can be an advantage for sensitive systems, but it also means the organization owns most of the security work.

In cyber security, on-prem systems matter because attackers often target the management layer that runs them. If a local control platform is exposed to the internet or patched late, a flaw can give an intruder access to configuration data, administrative functions, or connected devices. Defenders reduce that risk by limiting network reachability, enforcing strong authentication, segmenting management systems, and monitoring logs for unusual access or changes. In practice, “on-prem” shifts responsibility from the vendor to the operator, so security depends heavily on local discipline.
