Onion site

a Tor-hidden service often used to publish leak pages or proof files.

An onion site is a Tor-hidden service that can only be reached through the Tor network. It is not indexed by normal search engines and uses the .onion address space, which helps conceal the server’s location and sometimes the operator’s identity. In cyber security, onion sites matter because they can host legitimate privacy services, but they are also commonly used for leak pages, proof-of-access screenshots, and extortion portals.

Attackers use onion sites to publish stolen files, threaten disclosure, or share sample data while reducing the chance of easy takedown. In a case like a ransom-style post, a screenshot hosted on an onion site may be presented as evidence of compromise. Defenders should treat such proof cautiously: it may confirm malicious activity, but it can also be selective or misleading. Monitoring onion-site references, validating leaked material, and checking internal logs and accounts are practical response steps when an extortion claim appears.
