The Open VSX Registry is a marketplace for extensions used in developer tools and related environments. Like other package ecosystems, it helps users discover and install add-ons that extend editors, language support, and build workflows. In security terms, it is part of the software supply chain: the registry, publisher identity, package name, and metadata all influence whether a tool looks trustworthy.
This matters because attackers can abuse extension marketplaces by publishing lookalike packages, copying descriptions, or choosing names that resemble legitimate projects. If a developer or automated build system installs the wrong extension, the attacker may gain access to environment details, source-control context, tokens, or other sensitive metadata. Defenders should verify publisher provenance, restrict what extensions are allowed in CI and developer systems, and treat extension installs as a security-relevant action, not just a convenience feature.
