Operational information

internal business records such as pricing, financing, or workflow details.

Operational information is internal business data that supports day-to-day company activity, such as pricing, financing, supplier terms, inventory data, and workflow details. It is not always as obviously sensitive as passwords or source code, but it can still reveal how an organization makes money, negotiates, and runs its operations.

In cyber security, operational information matters because attackers can use it for extortion, fraud, or competitive abuse. If stolen, it may expose margins, customer agreements, internal approvals, or process bottlenecks that increase pressure on the victim. In real attacks, threat actors often target shared drives, finance folders, email archives, and document systems to find this material. Defenders reduce the risk by limiting access, segmenting sensitive file stores, reviewing permissions, encrypting data, and monitoring for unusual downloads or bulk file transfers.
