Opportunity cost

The value of the best alternative forgone when money, time, or staff are assigned to one AI project instead of another.

Opportunity cost is the value of the best alternative you give up when money, time, or staff are committed to one project instead of another. In cyber security, this matters because every control has tradeoffs: a team that spends engineers on an AI detection pilot may delay patching, identity hardening, logging, or threat hunting. The question is not only whether a tool works, but whether it is the best use of scarce defensive resources.

Attackers also exploit opportunity cost. They try to force defenders into expensive response work, false-positive triage, or repeated manual reviews so security staff cannot focus on higher-value protections. Good security planning compares options by risk reduction, operational burden, and long-term maintenance, not just purchase price. For AI projects, opportunity cost helps explain why a model that looks useful on paper may still be the wrong choice if another investment would reduce more risk or save more analyst time.
