Oral communications interception is the unauthorized capture of spoken conversations, such as through a hidden recorder, bug, or misused microphone. Unlike network attacks, it targets the physical environment and the privacy of a room. In cyber security, this matters because sensitive meetings can expose strategy, credentials, legal advice, customer data, or personnel issues without any system being hacked.
This threat appears in real attacks when an insider, visitor, or contractor places a recording device in a conference room or uses a phone, smartwatch, or conferencing hardware to listen in. Defenses focus on physical security as much as digital controls: access badges, room sweeps, device restrictions, visitor escorting, and clear rules for confidential meetings. The key lesson is that secure software cannot protect a conversation if the room itself is compromised.
