OTAP

NSA’s Operational Technology Assurance Partnership for OT security evaluation.

OTAP stands for the NSA’s Operational Technology Assurance Partnership. It is a security evaluation framework for operational technology, especially industrial components such as smart controllers and other devices that can affect physical processes. OTAP is about proving trust with testable evidence, not just vendor claims.

It matters because OT systems often run critical infrastructure, where a weak component can become a path to unsafe behavior, sabotage, or downtime. In defense and procurement, OTAP-style assurance helps buyers compare secure development practices, firmware integrity, credential protection, update controls, and documentation. In real attacks, adversaries often exploit insecure defaults, exposed management interfaces, or poor supply-chain hygiene; OTAP pushes vendors toward controls that reduce those risks and gives defenders a more reliable basis for acceptance testing and procurement decisions.
