Out-of-band approval is a separate verification step for a sensitive action that happens outside the system or channel where the action was requested. For example, a post drafted in a social media tool might need confirmation through a different device, team, or workflow before it goes live.
This matters because it reduces the risk of a single compromised account, browser session, or insider mistake causing immediate damage. In cyber security, attackers often rely on speed: they hijack a trusted identity, publish a fraudulent message, and exploit the short window before defenders react. Out-of-band approval adds friction to that process by forcing a second, independent check. In practice, defenders use it for high-risk posts, payments, password resets, and access changes, where publishing or executing an action without extra review could directly enable fraud, impersonation, or market manipulation.
