Out-of-band console access is an alternate management channel used to reach a server or virtual machine when normal network access is down or unreliable. It may be provided by a hypervisor console, a cloud provider console, or dedicated hardware management tools such as BMC interfaces. Because it sits outside the usual RDP, SSH, or VPN path, it can still work even if the operating system, network stack, or remote-access service is failing.
This matters in cyber security because it is often the last safe way to recover a system after a crash, a bad patch, a misconfiguration, or an account lockout. Defenders use it for troubleshooting, rollback, and incident response, while attackers may try to abuse or disable it to block recovery. Since it can bypass normal controls, it should be protected with strong authentication, least privilege, network isolation, and logging.
