Out-of-band telemetry

Independent monitoring data collected outside the device itself, useful when local logs may not be trustworthy.

Out-of-band telemetry is monitoring data gathered from a source outside the device or system being inspected. Instead of relying only on local logs, a defender may use switch mirrors, flow records, remote collectors, authentication servers, sensor appliances, or cloud-based monitoring that cannot be altered by the compromised host as easily.

This matters because attackers often delete logs, disable auditing, or tamper with the management plane after gaining access to routers, firewalls, or authentication systems. Independent telemetry helps verify what happened, when it happened, and which systems were involved. In practice, teams correlate device logs with out-of-band sources to spot rerouted traffic, unexpected admin sessions, configuration changes, or abnormal login patterns. It is a core defense when the local system can no longer be treated as a trustworthy witness.
