Patient document scans

Digitized records that may contain clinical, billing, or identity details.

Patient document scans are digitized copies of medical paperwork, such as intake forms, referrals, lab requests, insurance cards, consent forms, and billing records. In healthcare systems, these files often mix clinical details with personal identifiers like names, addresses, dates of birth, policy numbers, and account data.

They matter because a single scan can expose protected health information (PHI) and create outsized risk for identity theft, insurance fraud, social engineering, and regulatory exposure. In real attacks, intruders often steal or extort scanned documents because they are easy to monetize and hard for victims to replace. Defenders reduce risk by limiting access, encrypting storage, logging access to document repositories, classifying scans as sensitive data, and testing backups and retention controls.
