Patient information is data tied to a person’s care, identity, or insurance status. It can include names, dates of birth, medical history, treatment details, policy numbers, and contact information. Because this data identifies people and often reveals highly sensitive health facts, it is a prime target for cybercriminals.
In attacks, stolen patient information is often used for identity theft, medical fraud, phishing, and extortion. Even when attackers do not access clinical systems, the data itself can be valuable for impersonation or social engineering. Defenders protect it with strong access control, encryption, logging, segmentation, and strict retention limits. Limiting how much patient data is stored and who can view it reduces the impact if an account, device, or vendor is compromised.
