Payment continuity

the capacity to keep transactions functioning under extreme stress.

Payment continuity is the ability to keep transactions moving when normal banking or payment systems are under extreme stress. That stress can come from cyberattacks, technical outages, infrastructure failure, or broader operational disruption. In practice, it means people and businesses can still send, receive, and settle payments even if part of the usual system is unavailable.

In cyber security, payment continuity matters because attackers often try to disrupt availability as much as steal data. Ransomware, denial-of-service attacks, compromised networks, and destructive malware can all slow or stop payment processing. Defenses focus on redundancy, failover, segmented infrastructure, offline backups, strong access control, and tested recovery procedures. Financial institutions also plan manual or standby payment paths so essential transactions can continue under constrained conditions. The goal is not just recovery after an incident, but maintaining trust and basic economic function while the incident is still unfolding.
