Payroll archives are stored records of past pay runs, tax deductions, benefits, bonuses, and sometimes direct-deposit details or identity data. Because they preserve historical employee information, they often contain a mix of personal, financial, and administrative records that are valuable to attackers.
In cyber security, payroll archives matter because a compromise can expose sensitive data, enable fraud, and increase extortion pressure. Threat actors may steal or stage these archives alongside ERP exports or other business records to prove access and coerce payment. Defenders should treat them as high-value data: restrict access, encrypt archives at rest, monitor unusual downloads, and keep retention periods as short as business and legal requirements allow.
