PCI scope

The set of systems that must meet payment card security requirements.

PCI scope is the set of systems, applications, networks, and processes that must comply with payment card security requirements under the PCI DSS. If a system stores, processes, or transmits card data, or can affect the security of those functions, it may fall inside scope.

This matters because the larger the scope, the more controls, audits, and hardening work an organization must maintain. Security teams often use tokenization, segmentation, and strict access controls to keep sensitive cardholder data out of as many systems as possible. In real defenses, reducing PCI scope can limit where attackers can reach card data and shrink the number of systems that need intensive monitoring. In attacks, a weakly protected system inside scope can become a direct path to payment data, so accurate scope mapping is a core part of both compliance and breach prevention.
