Persona laundering is the practice of creating or recycling fake identities so manipulative content looks credible, independent, and unrelated to the operator behind it. The persona may be presented as a journalist, expert, local commentator, or ordinary user, with biographies, posting history, and style designed to pass as authentic.
In cyber security and influence operations, persona laundering matters because trust is the real target. It helps attackers distribute propaganda, social engineering messages, scams, or coordinated narratives through accounts that appear separate and legitimate. Generative AI can speed the process by drafting bios, posts, and translations, but the core tactic is human tradecraft: building believable identities and using them across channels. Defenders look for repeated account patterns, reused writing habits, sudden language shifts, coordinated timing, and bios or outreach content that do not match the account’s claimed history.
