Personal ID or passport files are digital copies of identity documents such as passports, national ID cards, driver’s licenses, or supporting scans and PDFs. They often contain names, birth dates, photos, document numbers, and issue or expiry dates, making them highly sensitive personal data.
In cyber security, these files matter because exposure can enable identity theft, account takeover, forged applications, and social engineering. They also create regulatory and legal risk under privacy and data-protection rules. Attackers may steal them from document management systems, email archives, HR platforms, cloud storage, or endpoints during ransomware, phishing, or insider abuse. Defenders protect them with least-privilege access, encryption at rest and in transit, strong logging, retention limits, and data loss prevention controls. If leaked, rapid validation, containment, and notification workflows are essential.
