Phone-number verification is a process for checking that a phone number is reachable or linked to a particular user, account, or device. Services commonly confirm access by sending a one-time code by SMS or voice call, or by using a trusted device or carrier signal. The check can establish control or association, but it does not by itself prove a person’s identity.
Verification matters in security because numbers are often used for account recovery, sign-in, fraud checks, and linking identities. Attackers may target these flows through SIM swapping, number porting, or interception of verification codes. Defenses include limiting reliance on SMS for sensitive authentication, monitoring changes to recovery numbers, and requiring clear user approval before reusing a verified number across accounts. In mobile systems, background verification can also create unexpected links between a device’s number and multiple accounts, making transparency and consent important.
