PICO-8

A programmable environment for creating small games and interactive software.

PICO-8 is a programmable fantasy console: a software environment that imitates the look and constraints of a small retro game system while still running on modern hardware. It is used to build compact games and interactive tools, often with tight limits on memory, graphics, and input. Those limits are part of its design, but the important technical point is that behavior comes from the runtime and the content loaded into it, not from fixed console hardware alone.

In cyber security, that matters because software-defined platforms can blur the line between “just a game” and executable code. A PICO-8 cartridge, project file, or embedded runtime can carry logic that affects file handling, input processing, and network-adjacent features in a larger host application. Defenders care about this kind of environment because it is still code execution, just in a playful form. Analysts look for the same issues they would in other runtimes: untrusted content, unsafe parsing, hidden automation, and overly broad permissions.
