Player agency

The degree of control a user has over choices inside a game system.

Player agency is the amount of control a user has over choices inside a game system. In practice, it means whether players can decide what to unlock, which path to follow, or how to spend limited progress. A battle pass with high player agency lets users prioritize rewards they value instead of forcing a single fixed order.

In cyber security, agency matters because clear, user-driven interfaces are harder to abuse than confusing or manipulative ones. Attackers often rely on misleading prompts, hidden defaults, or forced flows that push users into unwanted actions. Defenders improve agency by making choices explicit, showing consequences before confirmation, and separating optional actions from required ones. Good design reduces mistakes, limits social engineering, and makes reward or permission systems easier to trust.
